Anne Hathaway will play Selina Kyle, the slinky and savage outlaw who is known as Catwoman, in next year’s Christopher Nolan film “The Dark Knight Rises,” according to a press release from Warner Bros.
Catwoman — then just called “The Cat” – first appeared in 1940 as the creation of Bob Kane and Bill Finger, and she has brought leather-clad sexual tension to the Batman adventures both on the page and beyond; she was portrayed by Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt on the 1960s television series starring Adam West as the caped crusader (and by Lee Meriwether in 1966 film starring West) while Michelle Pfeiffer memorably cracked the whip in the role opposite of the masked Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s 1992 film “Batman Returns.” In 2004, Halle Berry starred in the character’s own solo film, “Catwoman,” but the film became an infamous flop and was jeered by comic-book fans after director Pitof jettisoned years of comic-book lore and character touchstones.
Director Christopher Nolan today announced that Anne Hathaway would play Selina Kyle a.k.a Catwoman in the upcoming Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises." Hathaway won out the coveted role of the future Catwoman over a list of actresses rumored to include Rachel Weisz, Jessica Biel, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley
Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.”
Christopher Nolan's cinematographer Wally Pfister has answered a few questions posed by Bleeding Cool writer Brendon Connelly as part of the Kevin and Josh Movie Show and the comments have now hit the web, hinting that we will, indeed, see Anne Hathaway suit up as Catwoman next summer in The Dark Knight Rises (as opposed to just appearing as Selina Kyle).
It appears that Pfister shot Hathaway’s screen test for the upcoming film and had this to say regarding her as Catwoman:
“She’s so good. She did an incredible job. She is a great, great actress… and she looked phenomenal in the wardrobe.”
He also spoke about the secretive nature of The Dark Knight Rises, admitting he didn't know who was testing for the role until two days before the screen tests:
"They could turn around and surprise me too. It's happened before. When I turned around and saw that list of girls that we were going to be screen testing before they cast Anne... I didn't know myself who was real and who wasn't until about two days before the tests when Emma (Thomas) told me."
“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
